PF2e asks you to make use of the strengths of whatever build you make. If you build soley for a ranged thaumaturge and then hang out at 10 feet distance, you're probably gonna feel pitifully weak as you take 3 actions to execute your best attack (Exploit Vuln, Strike, Reload) for 1d6+4 damage at level 1 when the two handed STR barbarian next to ...Player Builds. The thaumaturge has been out for some time, and I think the more common combinations of implement that I have seen are: Wand/tome for the "false mage" …It doesn't create persistent fire damage. It doesn't deactivate the regeneration. But it does do full damage because of the weakness damage rules. The thaumaturge isn't doing 12 bludgeoning + 5 "fire" - it's all "fire" damage. I had to go play around with building a character and reading it carefully, but that's how it's supposed to work, I think.
