In the old days the 45-90 for Long range was loaded with 100 grains of powder and a 520 to 550 grain bullet. It was so much in common use that the 45-100 aka the 2.6 was abandoned in just a short year or so. Shiloh Sharps .45-70. I've been saving my pennies and I'm getting closer to being able to plunk down the cash for one of these fine gems. I've decided on .45-70 because Shiloh guarantees that caliber for black powder as well as smokeless loads; I want the versatility of having both options. I compete in a local monthly BP match using 1874 Sharps rifles in .45-70. Target is an NRA SR-1 bull at 100 yards with a non-adjustable bench rest.Not so much with the Shiloh's, but the Itialians had a good bit of variety in the bore of earlier reproductions. The rings help center it in the bore when it's fired. There are also Richmond Laboratories bullets available (a LEE mold, from Eras Gone). There are copies of the original Confederate design.

They had some fun with me by mocking up a suppressor and saying I owed them for threading the octagon barrel. Good fun!There are any number of BACO molds that will make bullets that your Shiloh likes, and a few that it might not. Mostly I shoot Money bullets. The 458535M1 has worked well in almost all of my 45 cal rifles, with the exception of one of my 45-70 Shilohs. A small drop of oil on each side of the lever at the pin, that's all that's needed for lubricating the action. The variables you have to control- lead hardness, bullet type, bullet dia, powder type, lube, caps.1874. I have two Shiloh sharps. One is a 45/70, the other a 50/70. With the 45, I've shot a couple antelope and an elk. I shoot 405 grain gas checked bullets and RL-7 powder. In the 50, I shoot 425 lead and RL-7 powder. I shot one large pig with it. I have a beech front sight on both an tang vernier rear on both.
