Not sure if a short handguard is an issue on your canebrake, but on my Rattler, I added a hand stop to prevent me from getting too far forward on the guard with my grip. It's a pistol, so no forward hand grip without becoming a SBR.

If I wanted a shorter barrel in 300 BLK it would be 6.75" and definitely not the 5.5 Rattler. My favorite is the MPX due to ammo cost. The MPX is fun to shoot, so ammo cost is very relevant from the enjoyment standpoint.
